Duer Hot Springs Trek

Day 1 We will be expecting you

Your designated Destination Buddy will be in-waiting to greet and escort you to your resort. She or he will fill you in on intriguing details about the fascinating customs and traditions of Bhutan en-route so that you are well informed from the get-go and your stay is comfortable.
You should be at the hotel in little above an hour, sipping on a welcome drink. After the assisted check-in you can take the rest of the day to relax or walk around to explore the resort and orient yourself with the facilities.

Spare some time in the evening to hear a Bhutanese official deliver a talk about the concept of Gross National Happiness. By the end of the day, over a sumptuous Bhutanese dinner, you’ll be able to appreciate the merits of a concept that has been indoctrinated in the constitution of Bhutan and its way of life.
Day 2 Hikes and milestone establishments

Head to the famous Tango and Cheri monastery after breakfast at the hotel. Spend some time sifting through Buddhist manuscripts or books on Himalayan culture and religion at the National Library. Marvel at works of art at the Institute of Zorig Museum. Consider a visit to the Buddha View Point, the seat of Buddha Dordenma, an auspicious start of sorts. You’ll also be visiting National Memorial Chorten later in the day. Before you find yourself at a local bazaar shopping for mementos and artifacts, stop to admire the artisanal handiwork of local weavers at the Textile and Folk Heritage Museum.

Head back to the hotel in the evening for a hearty meal and a good night’s rest.
Day 3 Onward to Gangtey

It’s a 5-hour drive to Gangtey. A stop at Dochu La pass is recommended for the stunning 360-degree view of the Himalayas it offers. You’ll also come across an expansive valley in the shape of a bowl as you approach Gangtey.

Gangtey Goempa monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Bhutan, is the first historical place you’ll visit after lunch at the hotel. Spend a while here before hiking to the nearest village to experience life as it is for the locals. Mount a few prayer flags for luck, your Destination Buddy will show you the ideal places to do so. The remainder of the day can be spent in reflection and rest.
Day 4 Onward to Bumthang

Take off on an exhilarating 6-hour ride to the scenic Bumthang district, your next destination. Check-in and tuck into lunch. You’ll have all the time to soak in the sights and sounds of the valley with a leisurely stroll around town.

Back at the hotel in the evening, a refreshing massage and a good dinner will make all the difference.
Day 5 Bumthang to Gorsum

Starting location: Bumthang, Distance: 18 kms, Walking,
Total time: 7 hrs, Sleeping altitude: 3120m, Camp location: Gorsum
An 18 kilometer adventure begins on a trek route which passes through Chemkhar Chhu, the river famous for trout fish. It could take up to 7 hours to reach the campsite at an altitude of 3120 meters.
Day 6 Gorsum to Lungsum

Starting location: Gorsum, Distance: 12 kms, Walking,
Total time: 5 hrs, Sleeping altitude: 3160m, Camp location: Lungsum

Find your sense of wonder as you make your way through dense forests of spruce, hemlock, cypress, juniper and maple trees. The trail is more or less muddy and rises progressively till you reach the campsite at an altitude of 3160 meters.
Day 7 Lungsum to Tshochenchen

Starting location: Lungsum, Distance: 15 kms, Walking,
Total time: 7 hrs, Sleeping altitude: 3700m, Camp location: Tshochenchen
Overcome with a sense of déjà vu, you will encounter forests and paths that seem like they belong in the recent past, but as you draw closer to the campsite you will have come many hours and many miles ahead of yesterday.

Just above the rows of trees, is an ideal spot to pitch tents and set up camp at.
Day 8 Tshochenchen to Duer Tsachu

Starting location: Tshochenchen, Distance: 17 kms, Walking,
Total time: 7 hrs, Sleeping altitude: 3550m, Camp location: Duer Tsachu
Juli La pass which is at an altitude of 4700 meters is the first destination for the day. After crossing it, the path leads down to a lake before the elevation to Gokthong La pass. If you keep an eye out, you might even spot a musk deer, a blue sheep or two, and the Himalayan bear before arriving at the camp near Duer hot spring.
Day 9 Duer Tsachu - the hot springs

Take an entire day to yourself. Rest, relax and rejuvenate. A dip in the natural Himalayan hot springs can cure all aches and pains, and even nasal congestion. You may feel as good as new the next day.
Day 10 Duer Tsachu to Tshochenchen

Starting location: Duer Tsachu, Distance: 17 kms, Walking,
Total time: 7 hrs, Sleeping altitude: Below 4700m, Camp location: Tshochenchen
Set off to an early start to cross the Juli La pass once again and head to Tshochenchen. It’s another opportunity to chance upon the beautiful creatures that roam the valley. With some luck with the weather, the view of the surrounding mountains from as seen from the pass is a blissful sight.
Day 11 Tashochenchen to Lungsum

Starting location: Tashochenchen, Distance: 15 kms, Walking,
Total time: 5 hrs, Sleeping altitude: 3200 m, Camp location: Lungsum

Being back on this familiar path, through deep forests, will take you down memory lane as you return to the camp at Lungsum.
Day 12 Lungsum to Gorsum

Starting location: Lungsum, Distance: 12 kms, Walking,
Total time: 4 hrs, Sleeping altitude: 3120 m, Camp location: Gorsum

An early start ensures that you can trace your way back to Gorsum peacefully.
Day 13 Gorsum to Bumthang

Starting location: Gorsum, Distance: 18 kms, Walking,
Total time: 6 hrs, End location: Bumthang
A wonderful chapter ends here. On the last day of the trek, start out early in the day, head downhill from Gorsum till you reach Duer village. Follow the new motorable road to reach your ride. Drive back to the hotel at Bumthang. Enjoy a hot stone bath in the evening.
Day 14 Flight to Paro

In the early hours of the day you’ll reach Bumthang airport, one of the smallest airports in the world. Board the 20-minute flight to Paro. Check-in to your hotel, have lunch and rest for a bit. A visit to the National Museum and Rinpung Dzong is planned. There will also be enough time for leisurely strolls around town. Catching up on sleep should look like an inviting proposition this particular evening.
Day 15 Hike up Tiger’s Nest

A journey of over 6 hours on foot with steep inclines and breathtaking vistas will lead you up to the famous Tiger’s Nest monastery.
Head back to the hotel for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.

Spend time in the company of a monk this evening. Exchange perspectives and discuss philosophies that offer insights into how one can unfailingly embrace a life of fulfilment, wherever in the world they may be.
Day 16 Bid goodbye

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before you set out for the airport and the journey home.
